Yard Sale
A dark comedy about two estranged sisters gathering for the weekend after their mothers sudden death. In a stumbling reactionary effort to begin the foreign process of settling their mothers lapsed life… they have a yard sale.
We witness the intimacy of sibling resentment unravel while casual characters attempt to purchase things or unceremoniously pay respects all while pushing the sisters to their breaking point.
Will they raise enough money to afford their mothers funeral? Probably not. But will they find a way to peace and healing, maybe but maybe not.

Directors Statement
Loss has a strange way of distorting time. It forces us to exist in the past and present simultaneously, especially when the person we’ve lost is part of our foundation. Yard Sale is a dark comedy born from that disorienting space. The awkward, painful, and sometimes absurd experience of grief.
I was drawn to this story because of my own relationship with my sisters. Sibling bonds are uniquely complex, especially in times of trauma. When we are thrust back together as adults, we often revert to the dynamics we knew as children, no matter how much time has passed. For the sisters in this film, their estrangement is a wound they aren’t quite ready to examine, so they rely on the only thing still connecting them …the fragments of their shared childhood.
Visually, I wanted to capture the chaotic intimacy of their relationship. The yard sale setting serves as a perfect metaphor - sifting through the remnants of a life, trying to assign value to things that may be worthless to the world but priceless in memory. The challenge of shooting the yard sale portion in one day forced us to embrace the natural unpredictability of the environment, mirroring the characters' emotional instability.
More than anything, this film was a responsibility to honor the personal experiences of the writers, who channeled their own grief into this story. Their loss is real, and I wanted to ensure that every moment, even the comedic ones, carried that truth. In the end, this film isn’t about resolving grief but about confronting the uncomfortable, the mundane, and the absurd ways we try to move forward - together or apart.

Jason Hambach
Director of Photography
Born in Canton, Ohio, Jason took an interest in photography at an early age thanks to his dad handing him the family SLR loaded with film. He later landed in Columbus and has been working as a cinematographer of various commercials, music videos, and films. Having two daughters, he feels a definite understanding and connection to the lovingly divisive relationship between sisters Opal and Ruby.
He considers October in Ohio a magical time and feels fortunate to have lensed Yard Sale in such a window. That midwest season of contrasts and transitions, warm sunbeams and cool breezes, permeated the images of the film.

Austin Rauterkus
Editor
Austin Rauterkus was raised in the town of Defiance, a quiet, rural Iowa town of 300. An upbringing often only captured in movies about boyhood, he lived the true story. Running around quarries and riding dirt bikes with his best friends, always with a camera in hand, ready to take the footage to the cutting room floor. Using two VCRs he invented what he liked to call "the rolling edit" to troubleshoot the lag in analog tech.
A lover of group improv and live music, Austin now resides in Brooklyn, New York, making films with his kids on ipads, and turned the rolling edit into an award winning career editing music videos, commercials, and films. He's still reminding people that he's from Iowa, not Ohio, but he let it slide this time so he could edit Yard Sale.
